What to bring when you drop off your computer

A practical checklist for chargers, symptoms, accessories and important data before a repair visit.

Bring the device and the accessories relevant to the fault

For a laptop, bring the charger you normally use. If a dock, cable, external drive or other accessory is part of the problem, tell us before the visit so we can advise what to include.

For a desktop, do not assume every monitor, keyboard and cable is needed. Explain whether the fault depends on a specific display or accessory. Secure loose panels and transport the computer carefully.

Describe what happens, not only what you suspect

Useful details include when the problem started, the exact error, whether it happens every time and any recent update, damage or hardware change. “It restarts after ten minutes in this game” is more useful than an untested conclusion about a failed part.

A photo or short video of an intermittent fault can help. Do not keep forcing a damaged, overheating or electrically unsafe device to reproduce a problem.

Think about your data before the visit

Back up important files where possible. Tell us if you cannot access the data, if recovery is the main concern, or if there are particular files that must be considered before work starts.

Repair may cause data loss. A backup or recovery service needs its own discussion; no result is guaranteed. Read and keep the written repair notice. Do not put passwords or sensitive account information into a booking or enquiry form.

Allow for assessment and parts checks

A free drop-off appointment is a time to leave the device, not a promise of a repair while you wait. Assessment follows the queue and the nature of the problem unless another arrangement has been agreed.

For a laptop screen replacement, the exact panel must be checked before ordering. The model name alone may not establish the correct part, price or lead time.

Keep the check-in clear

At drop-off, confirm the device, visible condition, reported problem and accessories being left. Mention the deadline and the best way to contact you. Approval of proposed paid work is separate from booking or acknowledging a notice.

Wait for confirmation that the device is ready before arranging collection. If your plans change, contact the workshop so the next step can be agreed.
